Which one do you have?
- 126500LN (2023–)Current steel ceramic-bezel reference; white 'Panda' dial leads.
- 116500LN (2016–2023)The reference that established the modern Daytona premium; Panda dial above black.
- 116520 (2000–2016)Steel bezel, in-house 4130 movement — the most accessible modern Daytona.
- 16520 'Zenith' (1988–2000)Automatic Daytona with the Zenith El Primero-based movement; collectible, dial variations matter.
- Precious-metal Daytonas and vintage manual-windGold and platinum models trade nearer retail; vintage 6239/6263 and Paul Newman dials are auction pieces.
What moves the price
- 01
Steel references carry the extreme premium; gold and two-tone Daytonas are priced much closer to retail because supply is looser.
- 02
Dial colour: white 'Panda' dials outsell and out-price black dials on the ceramic references.
- 03
Box and papers matter enormously at this price — a full-set Daytona sells for a clear premium and much faster, and papers settle the authenticity questions buyers will otherwise ask.
- 04
Reference-specific details (the 116500's bezel vs. the 126500's, dial variations on 16520s) are what collectors pay for — a general 'steel Daytona' price is only a starting point.
- 05
Unpolished cases and original bracelets command collector premiums; a heavily polished case reduces value.
- 06
The used-market premium moves with the wider watch market — Daytona prices rose and fell sharply in 2021–2023; current comps matter more than last year's.

The full story
The Daytona is the most expensive steel watch to buy on the secondary market relative to its retail price — a steel Daytona has traded at roughly double its boutique price for years, because Rolex makes comparatively few and allocates them to its best clients. It's the watch that most defines the 'Rolex premium', and also the one where the specific reference and dial matter most.
The current reference is the 126500LN (2023 on, new movement, slightly redesigned bezel), which replaced the 116500LN (2016–2023) with its ceramic bezel — the white-dial 'Panda' version of either is the most wanted. Before that, the 116520 (2000–2016) with a steel bezel is the affordable modern Daytona, and the 16520 (1988–2000) with a Zenith-based movement is a collector's watch. Vintage manual-wind Daytonas, above all the 'Paul Newman' exotic dials, are auction-house territory.

Questions
Why is a steel Daytona worth twice retail?
Rolex produces relatively few steel Daytonas and allocates them to established clients, so the secondary market is the only route for most buyers. Demand far exceeds that supply, and the premium is the result — it narrowed from its 2022 peak but remains large.
Is the 116500LN or 126500LN worth more?
They trade close to each other, with the newer 126500LN generally a little higher in like-new condition and the 116500LN benefiting from being discontinued. Dial colour (Panda) affects price more than the choice between the two references.
Are gold Daytonas a better buy than steel?
On resale, gold and platinum models trade much nearer their (higher) retail because they're easier to buy new — you pay for the metal rather than for scarcity. Steel is where the premium is, in both directions.
