What moves the price

  1. 01

Black Bay (especially the Fifty-Eight and Black Bay Chrono) drives most current resale demand — other lines move more slowly.

  2. 02

Whether the movement is in-house (Manufacture caliber, roughly 2015+) or an older ETA-based movement affects how serious collectors value it.

  3. 03

Vintage "Snowflake" Submariners (1970s-80s, ref. 7016/9401) are a distinct, separately-valued collector tier from any modern Tudor.

  4. 04

Box & papers still add a real premium, though less dramatically than at the Rolex tier.

  5. 05

Because Tudor lacks Rolex's severe waitlists, most current-production pieces resell at or below retail rather than above it — don't assume a resale premium.

  6. 06

Bracelet/strap variant (steel bracelet vs. fabric strap options on Black Bay models) affects both original price and what buyers expect to pay used.

The full story

Tudor is Rolex's sister brand under the same parent company, and for decades that was mostly a footnote — Tudor used Rolex cases with third-party movements at a lower price point. That's no longer the story: since roughly 2015, Tudor builds its own in-house Manufacture movements, and the Black Bay line turned it into a resale category with real, independent demand rather than just "the affordable Rolex alternative."

Tudor doesn't carry Rolex's extreme waitlists or above-retail premiums — most current-production Tudor resells at or modestly below retail. The real resale strength is concentrated in specific references, not the brand broadly.

A general starting point, not a per-model quote — a Black Bay Fifty-Eight and a vintage 1970s "Snowflake" Submariner are priced in completely different worlds. Scan yours in Cashd for a model-specific estimate.

Used (eBay listings): the Tudor averaged $2,839 on Sep 11 and $3,350 on Oct 16, so prices rose 18% over 36 days of tracking. The lowest daily median was $2,395 (Sep 21) and the highest $3,350 (Oct 16).

The median of all 81 Tudor listings is $3,350, which reflects which models are most common on the used market, not what yours is worth.

Questions

Is Tudor basically a cheaper Rolex?

That was historically true when Tudor used Rolex cases with third-party movements, but since around 2015 Tudor builds its own in-house movements and has its own independent collector demand, especially for the Black Bay line — it's its own brand at this point, not just an alternative.

Do Tudor watches sell above retail like some Rolex models?

Rarely — Tudor doesn't have Rolex's severe waitlists, so most current-production pieces resell at or somewhat below retail. Vintage Snowflake references are the main exception, commanding real collector premiums.

Does it matter if my Tudor has an in-house or ETA movement?

To serious collectors, yes — an in-house Manufacture movement (roughly 2015 onward) is generally viewed more favorably than the third-party ETA movements Tudor used before that, though both are perfectly reliable in practice.
