Which one do you have?
- Datejust 41 (126300 / 126334)The current men's size; the fluted-bezel Jubilee configuration is the most wanted.
- Datejust 36 (126200 / 126234)The classic size, now unisex in demand; the 'Wimbledon' and green-dial variants carry premiums.
- Datejust 31 and 28 (Lady-Datejust)Smaller sizes with a huge range of dial and diamond options; priced on configuration and metal.
- Older references: 16233, 16234, 16014, 1601The most affordable modern Rolexes; two-tone 16233s are plentiful and priced on condition.
What moves the price
- 01
Configuration: size, bezel, bracelet, and dial each move the price — a 41 fluted Jubilee with a Wimbledon dial and a 36 smooth Oyster with a silver dial can differ by thousands.
- 02
Dial rarity: specific dials (Wimbledon, mint green, palm, mother-of-pearl, diamond-set) are what turn a Datejust from 'at retail' into 'above retail'.
- 03
Two-tone (Rolesor) vs. steel: two-tone models are abundant on the used market and often trade below their steel equivalents despite costing more new.
- 04
Box and papers add a premium, though a smaller one than on sports models — the Datejust's price is less about scarcity.
- 05
Bracelet condition (stretch on Jubilee bracelets especially) and whether the bracelet is original to the watch are checked by buyers.
- 06
Aftermarket diamonds or bezels sharply reduce value to knowledgeable buyers — a factory-set dial is worth far more than an aftermarket one.

The full story
The Datejust is the Rolex Rolex has made the most of, since 1945, in more sizes, dials, bezels, and bracelets than any other model — which makes it the easiest Rolex to price accurately and the one least likely to carry a big premium over retail. There's simply enough supply that a used Datejust trades close to, or somewhat below, its new price, with specific configurations as the exceptions.
The configuration is the price: 36mm vs. 41mm (the 126234 / 126334 current references) vs. the 31 and 28 ladies' sizes; fluted vs. smooth bezel; Jubilee vs. Oyster bracelet; and the dial — a plain black or silver Datejust is the baseline, while the 'Wimbledon' slate-and-green-numeral dial, the mint green and palm motif dials, and mother-of-pearl or diamond dials each price separately. Older references (16233, 16234, 1601) are the affordable way into a Rolex and are valued mostly on condition.
Used (eBay listings): the Rolex Datejust averaged $5,348 on Sep 11 and $5,035 on Oct 16, so prices fell 5.8% over 36 days of tracking. The lowest daily median was $4,599 (Oct 3) and the highest $5,500 (Sep 15).

Questions
Does a Datejust sell above retail like a Submariner?
Usually not — supply is much larger. Most configurations resell near or below retail; a few sought-after dials (Wimbledon, mint green) and the fluted Jubilee 41 can trade above it.
Is a 36mm or 41mm Datejust worth more?
The 41 retails higher and generally resells higher, but the 36 has become fashionable as a unisex size and some 36 configurations now sell for more than the equivalent 41. Check comps for the exact reference and dial.
Are older two-tone Datejusts worth much?
They're the most affordable entry to Rolex and sell readily, but there are a lot of them — a 1990s 16233 in good condition is a several-thousand-dollar watch priced on condition and service history, not scarcity.
