Which one do you have?

  • General release (BB550 colorways)White/Green, White/Navy, and seasonal releases — widely stocked; deadstock resells near retail, worn pairs well below.
  • Aimé Leon Dore collaborationsThe 2020 original trio and the later ALD colorways — limited and the only 550s with a consistent premium.
  • Other collaborationsAuralee, Rich Paul 'Forever Yours', Joe Freshgoods — smaller releases with real but colorway-dependent demand.

What moves the price

  1. 01

Collaboration or not is nearly the whole price question for the 550 — general releases have had enough supply that resale premiums are gone.

  2. 02

The 550's white leather and suede-panel versions show wear differently; suede colorways are harder to clean and priced more harshly when worn.

  3. 03

Deadstock with box is needed for StockX/GOAT; a worn pair is a local or eBay sale at everyday-sneaker prices.

  4. 04

Sizing runs large on the 550 and many buyers size down — an unusual size isn't scarce in the way it is for Jordans, so there's little size premium.

  5. 05

ALD pairs are counterfeited; the collaboration's insole print and box details are what buyers check, so photograph them.

  6. 06

Seasonal colorways from a specific year rarely gain value — there's usually no reason to hold a general-release 550.

The full story

The New Balance 550 is a 1989 basketball shoe that was essentially forgotten until Aimé Leon Dore revived it in 2020, and for about a year it was one of the hardest sneakers to buy at retail. Then New Balance did what Nike did with the Dunk: released the general-release colorways in volume. Today a standard 550 (White/Green, White/Navy, the seasonal colour blocks) is easy to find at retail and resells around or under it.

The ALD collaborations are the real resale story — the original 2020 drops and the later ALD colorways were limited and still trade well above retail — along with a handful of other collaborations (Auralee, Rich Paul). For everything else, the 550 is a well-liked everyday sneaker with an everyday-sneaker price.

Deadstock (StockX): the New Balance 550 averaged $146 on Sep 11 and $159 on Oct 16, so prices rose 8.9% over 34 days of tracking. The lowest daily median was $138 (Sep 25) and the highest $189 (Oct 6).

Questions

Are New Balance 550s still worth anything on resale?

General releases sell around retail deadstock and well under it worn — the resale premium disappeared once New Balance started producing them in volume. Aimé Leon Dore and other collaboration pairs are the exception and still resell above retail.

How can I tell an ALD 550 from a regular one?

The ALD versions carry Aimé Leon Dore branding on the insole and tongue label and came in specific colorways (the 2020 originals in white with red, green, or navy, and later colour blocks). If there's no ALD branding, it's a general release regardless of colorway.

Should I keep a deadstock pair of 550s hoping they go up?

For a general release, no — supply is high and new colorways keep coming. Collaboration pairs can hold or rise, but even those move with fashion rather than steadily appreciating.
