Which one do you have?

  • Retro OG (Nike Air heel)The 1989-branded retros — Bred (2019), White Cement (2016, 2025), Fire Red (2020), Military Blue (2024). The collector tier.
  • Retro (Jumpman heel)Same colorways with Jumpman branding on the heel, mostly from the late 1990s–2010s; priced below the Nike Air version.
  • Non-OG colorwaysMilitary Black, Black Cat, Thunder, Red Cement — modern colorways with genuine demand, priced on their own release, not on 1989 nostalgia.
  • CollaborationsTravis Scott (Cactus Jack, Purple), Off-White Sail, Union, Nike SB Pine Green — the four-figure tier.

What moves the price

  1. 01

Colorway and retro year set the price — a 2019 Bred with Nike Air heel and a 2012 Bred with a Jumpman heel are the same colorway at very different values.

  2. 02

The Jordan 4's sail/off-white midsoles yellow with age, even in the box. Buyers zoom in on the midsole in photos; an icy or yellowed sole on a 'deadstock' pair is priced accordingly.

  3. 03

Deadstock with the original box and both sets of laces is required for StockX/GOAT; worn pairs go through eBay and the like at a discount.

  4. 04

Netting and wing-eyelet condition is checked closely — the mesh netting on the sides and the plastic wings crack and discolour on older pairs and are hard to fix.

  5. 05

Size runs matter here too: popular sizes have the most sellers competing; unusual sizes can sell for more than the 'typical' price.

  6. 06

Women's and GS (grade school) sizing sell at their own price points, usually lower than the men's release of the same colorway — check which size run yours is before pricing.

The full story

The Air Jordan 4 is the most consistently resellable Jordan retro after the 1 — its 1989 colorways (Bred, White Cement, Fire Red, Military Blue) get re-released every few years, sell out, and settle above retail more reliably than almost any other silhouette. Because the design is so instantly recognisable, even newer non-OG colorways like Military Black and Black Cat carry real demand.

One detail sets the retro years apart: the heel tab. Retros that say "Nike Air" on the heel (the original 1989 branding) are the ones collectors chase; retros with a Jumpman heel are considered lesser versions of the same colorway. When a colorway has been released both ways, the Nike Air version usually trades meaningfully higher.

Deadstock (StockX): the Air Jordan 4 averaged $197 on Sep 11 and $209 on Oct 16, so prices rose 6.1% over 35 days of tracking. The lowest daily median was $192 (Sep 16) and the highest $234 (Sep 26).

Questions

Why does a Jordan 4 with 'Nike Air' on the heel sell for more?

It's the original 1989 branding, and Jordan Brand only uses it on select retros — collectors treat those as the definitive version of a colorway. The same colorway with a Jumpman heel is usually an earlier, less sought-after retro and trades lower.

My Jordan 4s are deadstock but the midsole has yellowed — are they still deadstock?

Technically yes if they're unworn, but buyers and authenticated marketplaces price yellowing as a real defect. Expect a discount from the clean-pair price, and photograph the midsole honestly — it's the first thing a buyer looks for on an older Jordan 4.

Is it worth restoring a worn Jordan 4 before selling?

Usually not beyond a careful clean — sole-icing, re-painting, or sole swaps are viewed as restorations, must be disclosed, and typically don't raise the price by more than they cost. A clean, honestly described worn pair sells fine on eBay at worn-pair prices.
