What moves the price

  1. 01

Size: small and medium are liquid; mini and large are slower.

  2. 02

Personalisation: an embroidered name cuts value meaningfully and narrows the buyer pool.

  3. 03

Corners and base: the embroidered canvas frays and dirties at the corners — the main deduction.

  4. 04

Print: Oblique and Toile de Jouy are the reference; seasonal prints are priced on their own demand.

  5. 05

Authentication by the date tab and certificate card; the Book Tote is among the most counterfeited Dior pieces.

  6. 06

Expect a real discount to retail even for clean examples — it's priced as fashion.

The full story

The Book Tote (2018) is the Dior bag everyone recognises — the fully embroidered canvas tote in Oblique, Toile de Jouy, and seasonal prints — and it's the clearest case of Dior pricing as fashion rather than as a classic. It sold at retail with waitlists in its first years, but the used market has always priced it at a real discount: it's a big, unstructured, canvas bag, it shows wear quickly, and a large share of them were personalised with embroidered names, which the next owner doesn't want.

Sizes run mini, small, medium (the original), and large, with the small and medium the liquid ones. The embroidery wears at the corners and the base, and the bag has no closure or feet — buyers look at the corners first, then check for a name.

Used (eBay listings): the Dior Book Tote averaged $1,605 on Sep 11 and $1,595 on Oct 16, so prices held roughly flat (-0.6%) over 36 days of tracking. The lowest daily median was $1,492 (Sep 25) and the highest $1,645 (Sep 30).

Questions

Does the Dior Book Tote hold its value?

No — it's an unstructured canvas tote priced as a fashion piece, and used examples sell at a real discount to retail. Clean, un-personalised small and medium bags in Oblique hold best.

How much does a personalised name reduce the price?

Meaningfully — most buyers won't carry someone else's name, so a personalised tote sells for less and to a smaller pool. If yours is personalised, price it from personalised comps, not clean ones.

Small or medium Book Tote — which sells better?

The small has the most demand today; the medium (the original) is close behind. The mini and large are niche sizes.
