Which one do you have?

  • Chanel 19 small (26cm)The most popular size and the price reference.
  • Chanel 19 large (30cm)The original 'large' from launch; strong demand, slightly below the small today.
  • Chanel 19 maxi (36cm)The biggest; a smaller buyer pool and lower resale relative to retail.
  • Wallet on chain and accessoriesPriced on their own — the WOC is liquid and sells fast.

What moves the price

  1. 01

Size: small and large are the liquid ones; the maxi sells slower.

  2. 02

Leather: goatskin holds its shape better than lambskin and is priced accordingly used; the puffy quilting flattens with use.

  3. 03

Colour: black and beige are the fastest sellers; seasonal colours can go either way.

  4. 04

Condition of the mixed-metal chain and the CC turn-lock — plating wear on the ruthenium links is noted by buyers.

  5. 05

Authentication: microchip (2021 on) or serial sticker plus authenticity card; the 19 is counterfeited widely.

  6. 06

Retail increases set the ceiling — a 19 bought at launch can resell for close to what it cost, but below today's retail.

The full story

The Chanel 19 (named for the year it launched, 2019) was Karl Lagerfeld's last bag design with Virginie Viard, and it became Chanel's most successful new style in a decade — a puffy, oversized-quilt flap with mixed gold, silver, and ruthenium hardware on the chain. It sits a clear step below the Classic Flap on resale but has followed the same pattern: Chanel raised its retail sharply after launch, and used prices moved up with it.

Sizes are the main variable — small, large, and maxi flaps, plus a wallet-on-chain — with the small and large the liquid ones. The puffy goatskin or lambskin is soft and shows corner wear and quilting flattening; because the bag's look is its softness, a bag that has slouched or lost its shape is priced down more than a Classic Flap with similar use would be.

Used (eBay listings): the Chanel 19 averaged $3,765 on Sep 11 and $3,900 on Oct 16, so prices rose 3.6% over 36 days of tracking. The lowest daily median was $3,700 (Sep 15) and the highest $4,035 (Oct 9).

Questions

Does the Chanel 19 hold value like the Classic Flap?

Not quite — it's a step below, but it holds value far better than most designer bags because Chanel raised its retail significantly after 2019. A clean small or large in black resells for a large share of its original price.

Small or large — which resells better?

The small currently leads on demand and price; the large is close behind. Both are liquid; the maxi is the one that takes longer and sells for a smaller share of retail.

Does a slouched or flattened Chanel 19 lose much value?

Yes — the puffy quilting is the bag's whole look, and buyers price a bag that has lost its shape as worn even if the leather is clean. Store it stuffed and photograph it standing to show its shape.
