Which one do you have?
- Moonwatch Professional 3861 (2021–)Current calibre; hesalite (310.30.42.50.01.001) and sapphire versions priced separately.
- Moonwatch Professional 1861 (1997–2021)The discontinued generation; still the most common Speedmaster on the market and a strong value.
- Speedmaster Reduced and non-Professional linesAutomatic, smaller, and much cheaper on resale — check the case back before pricing from Moonwatch comps.
- Limited editions: Snoopy, Apollo 11, Speedy TuesdayThe collector tier — several trade well above their retail, especially the 2020 'Silver Snoopy'.
- Vintage 861 / 321 SpeedmastersPre-1997 and especially calibre 321 (pre-1969) models are a separate collector market priced on originality.
What moves the price
- 01
Generation and crystal: 3861 vs. 1861, hesalite vs. sapphire — four distinct prices for what looks like one watch.
- 02
Limited editions can exceed retail; standard Moonwatches don't — know which you have before pricing.
- 03
Box and papers (and for 3861 models, the warranty card) add a premium; the Moonwatch's presentation box and extra strap are expected on a full set.
- 04
Bracelet vs. strap: the bracelet versions cost more new and resell higher; a watch sold on a strap alone is priced accordingly.
- 05
Service history matters — the manual-wind chronograph movement is serviced every several years and buyers price an overdue service in.
- 06
Condition of the bezel insert (the tachymeter scale) and crystal: hesalite scratches easily but polishes out; a cracked bezel insert is a real deduction.

The full story
The Speedmaster Professional — the Moonwatch — is Omega's most collected model and the reason Omega has a real secondary market at all. Unlike Rolex's steel sports models it doesn't trade above retail: a standard Moonwatch resells at a discount to its boutique price, which makes it one of the best-value serious watches to buy used and means sellers should price from used comps, not from retail.
The generation matters. In 2021 Omega replaced the long-running calibre 1861 Moonwatch with the 3861 (a Master Chronometer with a redesigned bracelet and dial details), and the two are priced as different watches. Within each generation, the hesalite-crystal version (the one closest to the NASA-era original) and the sapphire 'sandwich' version are distinct references. The Speedmaster Reduced (a smaller automatic) and the many non-Professional Speedmasters sit well below the Moonwatch; the limited editions — Snoopy, Apollo anniversaries, the Speedy Tuesday releases — are the collector tier and can trade far above retail.
Used (eBay listings): the Omega Speedmaster averaged $3,397 on Sep 11 and $4,500 on Oct 16, so prices rose 32.5% over 36 days of tracking. The lowest daily median was $3,250 (Sep 30) and the highest $4,950 (Oct 15).

Questions
Does the Speedmaster hold its value?
It holds value better than most non-Rolex watches but does not appreciate: a standard Moonwatch resells at a discount to retail. Limited editions and vintage calibre 321 watches are the exceptions that can rise.
Hesalite or sapphire — which is worth more?
Sapphire costs more new and resells higher, but the hesalite version is the purist's choice and holds a larger share of its retail. Neither is 'wrong'; they're simply priced as separate references.
How much does the Snoopy Speedmaster sell for?
Well above its retail — the 2020 'Silver Snoopy Award' 50th anniversary has traded at multiples of its boutique price and is the most sought-after modern Speedmaster. Earlier Snoopy editions (2003, 2015) are also strong collector pieces.
