Which one do you have?
- Tank Must (2021–) and Tank Solo (2004–2021)The steel entry models, mostly quartz; large and small sizes; the most-traded Tanks.
- Tank Louis CartierThe gold dress Tank; mechanical (manual) versions carry the premium, quartz versions less so.
- Tank FrançaiseIntegrated-bracelet Tank; relaunched 2023 — older two-tone models are plentiful and affordable.
- Tank Américaine and Tank AnglaiseCurved-case and integrated-crown variants; priced on metal and size.
- Vintage Tank and Must de Cartier (1970s–90s)Gold-plated vermeil 'Must' Tanks and vintage gold Tanks — a separate market where condition and originality decide everything.
What moves the price
- 01
Line first, then metal, then movement: a quartz steel Must and a manual-wind gold Louis Cartier are different watches by an order of magnitude.
- 02
Quartz vs. mechanical within a line is a real price split — mechanical Tanks resell higher and are what collectors want.
- 03
Size: the large ('LM') sizes are more in demand today than the small for most lines, reversing the older pattern.
- 04
Box and papers matter, and for gold models a Cartier service history helps — the movements are small and buyers price in servicing.
- 05
Strap and buckle: Cartier's deployant buckle and original strap add value; an aftermarket strap is expected to be disclosed.
- 06
Crystal and case-edge condition: the Tank's flat crystal and sharp brancards show scratches, and a heavily polished gold case loses its lines.

The full story
The Tank is a family of watches, not a model, and the family spans an enormous price range: a steel quartz Tank Must is Cartier's entry point, a gold Tank Louis Cartier is a five-figure dress watch, and a vintage Tank Louis Cartier with the right provenance is an auction piece. Every one of them looks like 'a Cartier Tank' to a buyer who hasn't checked the case back, and none of them are priced the same.
On resale, Cartier's revival of the Tank Must in 2021 (including the solar-powered SolarBeat version) made the entry-level Tank fashionable again and pushed used prices for the discontinued Tank Solo, its predecessor, toward retail. The Tank Française, relaunched in 2023 with a redesigned bracelet, and the Tank Américaine sit in the middle, and the Tank Louis Cartier in gold is the collector's Tank. Quartz versus mechanical, and steel versus gold, are the two splits that matter most within each line.
Used (eBay listings): the Cartier Tank averaged $2,850 on Sep 11 and $3,000 on Oct 16, so prices rose 5.3% over 36 days of tracking. The lowest daily median was $2,850 (Sep 11) and the highest $3,300 (Oct 6).

Questions
Does a Cartier Tank hold its value?
The Tank Must and Solo have held close to retail on resale since the 2021 relaunch made them fashionable; gold Tank Louis Cartiers hold value well but below retail; vintage gold Tanks can appreciate. Cartier is bought for design more than investment, and the price reflects that.
Is a quartz Cartier Tank worth less?
Yes, within the same line — a mechanical Tank Louis Cartier resells for noticeably more than the quartz version. For the Must and Solo, quartz is the standard and the price is set as such.
Are the vermeil 'Must de Cartier' Tanks from the 1980s worth much?
They're gold-plated silver and priced accordingly — typically in the low-to-mid thousands, depending on condition and dial. Plating wear and dial condition decide the price; they're collectible but not gold-Tank money.
