Which one do you have?

  • Kelly 25 and Mini Kelly IIThe smallest sizes and the strongest premiums — the Mini Kelly II in particular trades far above its retail.
  • Kelly 28The most versatile size; very liquid, strong in Sellier construction.
  • Kelly 32 / 35Larger and more vintage-associated; often nearer retail, with vintage 32s a market of their own.
  • Sellier vs. RetourneSellier (external stitching, rigid) currently prices above Retourne (soft) in the same size and leather.

What moves the price

  1. 01

Size and construction together — a Sellier 25 in Epsom is a different market from a Retourne 32 in Togo.

  2. 02

Leather: Epsom suits the Sellier's crisp lines and is the most common; Togo and Clemence for Retourne; Box calf and exotics price separately.

  3. 03

The shoulder strap, lock, keys, and clochette are expected; a missing strap is a clear deduction.

  4. 04

The blind stamp dates the bag and must be consistent with its features; recent stamps generally price higher.

  5. 05

Corners and the flap edges on Sellier bags show wear first; Retourne bags are checked for slouching and handle darkening.

  6. 06

Full set and receipt matter as much as for the Birkin — authentication is standard practice for any Kelly sale.

The full story

The Kelly is the Birkin's older sibling (1930s, renamed for Grace Kelly in 1956) and trades on the same logic: Hermès controls who gets to buy one, so the resale market carries a premium for anyone who wants to skip the boutique relationship. Kelly prices sit a little below equivalent Birkins for most sizes, with one exception — the small Kellys (25 and the Mini Kelly II) have been the most sought-after Hermès bags of recent years and can out-price a Birkin 25.

The Kelly has a construction choice the Birkin doesn't: Sellier (stitched on the outside, structured and crisp) versus Retourne (stitched inside then turned, softer and slouchier). Sellier is currently the more wanted and pricier construction in the same leather. The Kelly also comes with a removable shoulder strap, which must be present, and its longer lock-and-turn hardware is inspected closely for plating wear.

Used (eBay listings): the Hermès Kelly averaged $9,500 on Sep 11 and $9,448 on Oct 16, so prices held roughly flat (-0.6%) over 36 days of tracking. The lowest daily median was $8,800 (Sep 26) and the highest $10,000 (Oct 5).

Questions

Is a Kelly worth more than a Birkin?

Usually slightly less in the same size and leather, with the small sizes as the exception — Kelly 25s and Mini Kelly IIs have been among the most wanted Hermès bags recently and can exceed an equivalent Birkin. Both trade above retail in new condition.

Sellier or Retourne — which resells higher?

Sellier currently, in the same size and leather — its structured shape is the more fashionable look, and it's produced in smaller numbers. Retourne is softer, more casual, and slightly less expensive both new and used.

Are vintage Kellys valuable?

Yes — 1960s–90s Kelly 32s in Box calf are collector pieces priced on condition and originality. They're a different market from current-production bags: older stamps, handle patina, and hardware wear are expected, but the bag must be complete and authentic.
